A stochastic model for reproductive isolation under asymmetrical mating preferences

چکیده

More and more evidence shows that mating preference is a mechanism that can lead to a reproductive isolation event. In this paper, we consider a haploid population living on two patches linked by migration. Individuals are ecologically and demographically neutral on the space and differ only on a trait, a or A, determining both mating success and migration rate. The special feature of this paper is to assume that the strength of the mating preference and the migration depend on the trait carried. Indeed patterns of mating preferences are generally asymmetrical between the subspecies of a population. We prove that mating preference alone can lead to a reproductive isolation and we explicit the time before reproductive isolation occurs. To reach this result we use an original method to study the limiting dynamical system, analyzing first the system without migration and adding migration with a perturbation method. Then using simulations, we study the time before reproductive isolation with respect to the strength of migration and the strength of both mating preferences, highlighting that large migration rates tend to favor the most permissive types.

A stochastic model for speciation by mating preferences.

Mechanisms leading to speciation are a major focus in evolutionary biology. In this paper, we present and study a stochastic model of population where individuals, with type a or A, are equivalent from ecological, demographical and spatial points of view, and differ only by their mating preference: two individuals with the same genotype have a higher probability to mate and produce a viable off...

Speciation by reinforcement: a model derived from studies of Drosophila.

Reinforcement is an increase in premating reproductive isolation between taxa resulting from selection against hybrids. We present a model of reinforcement with a novel type of selection on female mating behavior. Previous models of reinforcement have focused on the divergence of female mating preferences between nascent species. We suggest that an increase in the level of female mating discrim...

Divergent Selection and the Evolution of Signal Traits and Mating Preferences

Mating preferences are common in natural populations, and their divergence among populations is considered an important source of reproductive isolation during speciation. Although mechanisms for the divergence of mating preferences have received substantial theoretical treatment, complementary experimental tests are lacking. We conducted a laboratory evolution experiment, using the fruit fly D...

Frequency-dependent selection and the evolution of assortative mating.

A long-standing goal in evolutionary biology is to identify the conditions that promote the evolution of reproductive isolation and speciation. The factors promoting sympatric speciation have been of particular interest, both because it is notoriously difficult to prove empirically and because theoretical models have generated conflicting results, depending on the assumptions made. Here, we ana...

Asymmetrical positive assortative mating induced by developmental lead (Pb2+) exposure in a model system, Drosophila melanogaster

Anthropogenic pollutants have the potential to disrupt reproductive strategies. Little is known about how lead (Pb2+) exposure disrupts individual-level responses in reproductive behaviors, which are important for fitness. Drosophila melanogaster was used as a model system to determine the effects of: 1) developmental lead exposure on pre-mating reproductive behaviors (i.e., mate preference), a...
